CT Abdomen / Pelvis ScreeningThis rapid CT examination screens the internal organs for asymptomatic potentially life-threatening tumors, aneurysms, lymph node enlargement, stones, and other diseases before they can be detected by physical exam. The patient swallows oral contrast prior to the test, in order to distinguish the hollow digestive tract from the solid organs. The referring doctor may recommend the use of intravenous contrast for better delineation of the solid organs such as the pancreas and kidneys, depending on the patients’ personal or family history. Early detection of cancer within certain abdominal and pelvic organs including the colon, ovaries and prostate may not be possible without the use of other tests, such as colonoscopy, ultrasound, blood tests or even biopsy. Prior consultation with a treating physician is strongly recommended. Reimbursement by insurers is limited so patients should check with their insurance company prior to scheduling an examination so they understand their financial obligations at the time of service. Examination PrepAbdomen/Pelvis CT: No eating or drinking for 3 hours prior to exam. You may be given a dilute solution of contrast to drink prior to the examination. This requires an additional waiting time of 45 minutes for the contrast to reach the intestines.
